Blogging Tools: Technorati

By: Bobby Finstock on 11/12/06 @ 11:23 am

Our next blogging tool is Technorati. Let me cover what technorati is first:

(This is taken directly from their webpage)

Technorati is a real-time search engine that keeps track of what is going on in the blogosphere — the world of weblogs.
A few years ago, Web search was revolutionized by a simple but profound idea — that the relevance of a site can be determined by the number of other sites that link to it, and thus consider it ‘important.’

In the world of blogs, hyperlinks are even more significant, since bloggers frequently link to and comment on other blogs, which creates the sense of timeliness and connectedness one would have in a conversation. So Technorati tracks the number of links, and the perceived relevance of blogs, as well as the real-time nature of blogging. Because Technorati automatically receives notification from weblogs as soon as they are updated, it can track the thousands of updates per hour that occur in the blogosphere, and monitor the communities (who’s linking to whom) underlying these conversations.

Technorati displays what’s important in the blogosphere — which bloggers are commanding attention, what ideas are rising in prominence, and the speed at which these conversations are taking place. Technorati makes it possible for you to find out what people on the Internet are saying about you, your company, your products, your competitors, your politics, or other areas of interest — all in real-time. All this activity is monitored and indexed within minutes of posting. Technorati provides a live view of the global conversation of the web.

To get the most out of Technorati you need to first register your blog and then tag them when you post. (When you register your blog it will ask you to write a description about your blog and list keywords, make sure you take the time to do this.) “Tagging” is assigning keywords to your posts. For example if you write a blog about plungers and tag your blog accordingly whenever someone does a search for plungers on technorati your entry tagged about plungers will come up.

Even if you do not want to tag your blog for
technorati you should without a doubt claim your blog . By claiming your blog you will be able to
see the people that link to you and you will be listed in their search
engine.

Tagging your blog using performancing is really easy to do. If you don’t have performancing read this entry about it: here.

First in order to tag you need to make sure your setting in performancing are correct.

1) Go to settings
2) On the bottom of the screen make sure the following two boxes are checked:
-Show extra publishing features
-Automatically insert Technorati links on publish?
3) Now when you go to write your blog next to the title bar is a box that says, “Publishing Options”. Click on that box before you are ready to post your blog. You can insert your tags for the blog you are about to post right in that screen. Also you can bookmark your post at del.icio.us as well as pinging your blog with various pinging services. (We will cover del.icio.us and pinging in future installments.)

Once you do that you are done you can publish the blog and it will be tagged, ready to be searched by technorati.

Technorati also offers various plug ins and tools for multiple browsers and operating systems. You can find out more about them here on technorati’s website: Technorati Tools.
