How come I can’t dress like a hooker for my prom?

I have to say when it comes to what people do with in their personal lives as long as it doesn’t negatively impact other people or more importantly myself. If you want to wear woman’s underwear while giving a business presentation because it relaxes you… well good for you.

However I saw this on cnn.com the other day about a girl that was kicked out of her high school prom because of her dress. And honestly I just had to laugh, in what realm of logic is this dress acceptable for a high school prom?

I can’t wait to see this girl on craigslist in a few years.

Honestly though I guess I shouldn’t make fun of her. I wore something slightly inappropriate to my prom.

speedo

At least I wore black? That is classy right?

Thanks for all the kind messages, comments, and pats on the back yesterday for getting on CNN. I really appreciate it.

I thought long and hard about what I can do with all this good will. The question that was bugging me last night was, “What should I do for a follow-up?”

The answer: Piss it all away of course!

As I have documented in the past there is one thing that I amazes me more than anything else. It is the simple face that Hitler essentially destroyed an entire style of facial hair. There is nothing in history that equals this. Nobody can grow that style of facial hair again because of the negative connotations that it brings.

A person that could be wearing that style of facial hair could be totally clueless to history. This person might be the nicest and most caring person on the planet, yet society would probably shun them because of how they shave their upper lip. There is no other facial hair that has this impact!

My post from Bloggers Unite was quoted on CNN this morning. Thanks Rich for making this happen. This was pretty sweet and for a really good cause.

I am pretty active member on the website blogcatalog.com. Every few months they do an event called “bloggers unite“, where a bunch of bloggers write about an important topic. This time around the topic is about human rights and I was kind of goaded into taking a break from the typical shenanigans, tomfoolery, and chicanery that goes on around here. Originally I was going to get on my soapbox and write about Darfur, child poverty, or something along those lines.

    Bloggers Unite

I would have felt all warm inside for spreading the word about an important cause. At the end of the day I would have checked my stats and seen that a few thousand people read the post, patted myself on the back for doing a good deed, and then returned to writing about important things like my blog getting banned in Qatar.

However it would be total bullshit to do something like that because:
    A) I don’t know very much about any of these causes
    B) You would have seen right through it
    C) What would it have accomplished besides feeding my own ego and possibly getting a few people to act?

The more I thought about this the more ashamed I was. I remember watching documentaries and movies like “Schindler’s List”, “Hotel Rwanda”, and the episode of “Band of Brothers” that showed the concentration camp and saying to myself, “I can’t believe humans could do that to other humans. Thank god it will never happen again.”

In one of the last history classes I took to finish my degree we discussed the African Diaspora, the Jewish Diaspora, and the tragedies that happened in India years ago. There were days when everyone in the class left in tears. That will happen because hearing accounts about systemic rape, mutilation, and genocide can be slightly powerful. After each class I again comforted myself by saying that this would never happen again.

The thing is these atrocities are happening again and most of us are turning a blind eye to it. I can tell you more about this season of American Idol (even though I hardly ever watch the show) than I can tell you about Darfur, it’s really sad.

    Ultimately what can I do?

To throw a few bucks to an aid organization and walk away would be kind of insulting. So I have decided to educate myself about Darfur, violence against women, and children’s rights. From there I can make intelligent choices about what I can do to impact these situations.

I invite you to do the same.

The biggest crime against humanity is apathy and I know I am guilty of it.

Please pass this blog along today to at least one person you know. Or better yet write a blog about a topic of your choice and send me the link so I can share it.

In the last few days one of the hot topics on the interweb has been how PR people pitch bloggers. Some bloggers have begun to “out” these pr firms and create a list so people can put them into their spam filters and not receive e-mails from them. They are calling it a blacklist. Now PR people are pissed and there is a little argument going on about the ego of bloggers and how the process works. (I have to say I love the internet. It is like high school. You have people in different groups that bash people in other groups and then name-calling commences.)

I get a lot of e-mails daily with press releases or reminder e-mails about certain topics that companies want me to blog about. These e-mails always start in the same style, “Hey you know what your readers might think is really cool?” This is where I get annoyed because I don’t think they have your best interest at heart. In fact they don’t even know you guys. Because I have a feeling that you have zero interest these following pitches: Continue reading ‘Do you really want to read crappy corporate pitches?’
