Five Obscure Slasher Films for you to Enjoy on Halloween
Halloween is tomorrow, and if you’re anything like Donk, you’re itching for some cheesy slasher films (you’re also suffering from painful rectal itch, but that’s another story). What’s that you say? Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elmstreet, and Halloween are played out? You’re looking for some fresh cheesy goodness? Well look no further. Here are five little-known horror movies that ratchet up the cheese level.
1. The Burning (1981)
This movie was one of the first to jump on the Friday the 13th bandwagon. A former camp handyman who was horribly burnt by rambunctious camp kids comes back for revenge. Sound familiar? It actually has some surprisingly good gore set-pieces, courtesy of THE MAN, Tom Savini. Also, check out a young Jason Alexander, Holly Hunter, and Fisher Stevens.
2. Cheerleader Camp (1987)
This movie brings the funny. Not much blood, but it’s just so bad you can’t turn away. Better yet, it stars an already over-the-hill Leif Garrett who was most likely coked out of his skull during most of the filming.
3. Sleepaway Camp II – Unhappy Campers (1988)
A lot of people like the original the best, but to me it takes itself too seriously. The sequel is just straight-up 80s horror schlock, as she-male Angela returns and kills dozens of camp counselors in hilariously creative ways. As a bonus, it features a character with one of the greatest movie mullets of all time.
4. Nail Gun Massacre (1985)
Do yourself a favor. Stop reading this blog and go buy this movie. This is the Sistine Chapel of bad horror movies, a masterpiece so profound that it may never be replicated. From the non-existent budget (a cop car with no marking or lights), to the ridiculous villain complete with a modulated darth vader voice, to the piss poor direction (in one scene a cop’s badge switches sides about 5 times) this movie has it all.
5. Pieces (1982)
A cult classic featuring a barely cohesive plot about a killer who cuts his victims to, you guessed it, pieces. This one has tons of senseless nudity and buckets of blood and gore. In other words, it is the shit.
So those are some of Donk’s favorites, but I’m always looking for more. What are some of your favorite horror movies, obscure or otherwise? Happy Halloween!

Sleepaway Camp- Amazing. Check out my website for a song all about it.
Shameless self promotion.
#5. Any reason to not have to go to Texas is good enough for me.
‘Hell’s Half Acre’. See it, or don’t if you have any taste in movies whatsoever.
hmmmm, if I can even find a copy of it i’ll watch it
Dude…how can you leave “Blood Freak” out of this!
believe it or not, heard of it but never watched it
I’ve never heard of Nail Gun Massacre. Now I have to find it. Sleepaway Camp 2 is excellent.
I also recommend Otis. It’s hilarious.
you can get it on Amazon. if you like cheesy movies get it immediately
How Cheerleader Camp did not win an Oscar is a freaking crime.
didn’t it win a few?
It was up for best screenplay and “best skeleton with boobs” scene, but lost the latter that year to Susan Sarandon in “Bull Durham”.
What, no Killer Clowns from Outer Space? Who knew popcorn and cotton candy could be so dangerous?
eh, too obvious (although good)
I watched Pieces as a child (I was seven when it was released so probably around 8 when I saw it) this one and Dolls ruined me on any horror movies for life. I was scared shitless, I haven’t seen it since and still remember the closing scene. I should face my fears and watch it again at 33, I’m sure I would find it humorous
I would also like to suggest “The Signal” and “Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon,” both superlative independent horror flicks produced in the last three years.
if you really like awful slasher movies, try Serum. For some reason, blockbuster carries it.
It could have been better if they actually followed the initial plot.
