Every Group of Lesbians Has a Queen Bee aka Peppermint Patty
I love watching people and groups to see how they work. Last night I went to Thursday in the Square here in Buffalo to watch a performance by the John Butler Trio. In front of my friend and I was a large group of lesbians who were absolutely entertaining as hell to watch. The one thing I notice whenever I see a group of lesbians out, is that there is always like an Alpha Lesbian that everyone in the group gravitates to.
Now when other groups go out there is sometimes someone with a dominant personality that kind of runs the show but with lesbians for some reason it seems that there is ALWAYS a dominant force. This girl last night was absolutely holding court amongst her friends with circles of other lesbians around here, whenever someone came in or out of the circle they always greeted her or told her that they were leaving. It was almost like they were seeking approval from her in order to go piss or buy a beer.
This got me to thinking though, how does a lesbian establish their role as the queen bee of the group? Primitive man, animals, and other groups do so in a physical nature, with the new leader disposing the old leader via confrontation. Once they have control people are afraid to challenge them, when there is an uprising the leader must attack the other party or parties to retain dominance. Lesbians don’t come off as big time fighters to me… So what could the key be?
1) Largest fist- I read somewhere if you look in an Indigo Girls CD liner notes it says “She who has big fist rules all.” This totally could be urban legend though.
2) She owns the first few seasons of the L-Word on DVD- I would totally follow anyone that had those sitting around.
3) It is really a guy- He has duped them all and they are all attracted to the pheromones he gives off. His “this is a flesh colored strap on” line will only continue to work by getting the girls hammered, well done sir… Bravo.
I am going to go with a combination of option one and two here…
What is something you notice about different social groups when you are out in public?

first of all, i will abstain for making fun of you for writing dominate instead of dominant. okay, i just did so i lie. there is the “alpha” person in every group of friends. but the “alpha” lesbian does seem all powerful when you are watching the group of lesbians out at the bar/concert/dance club. it is very strange.
I’m pretty sure the Alpha Lesbian is the one who can piss the farthest standing up and/or the one “packing” the most…just a guess though.

See now this is so current as we have the gay pride week over here right now. I shall observe closely tomorrow when I see the parade and report back to you how many Alpha Lesbos I see!
I usually notice who the faker is in a group, regardless if it’s the one laughing at jokes JUST because a guy tells them or when people lie. It’s a talent I have and I can spot it the first time I talk to someone or hear them talk to someone else, I’m so fierce! The use of the word fierce is only to prepare for tomorrow!

I went to gay pride week here in the ROC a few weeks ago with some friends, and I must not be that observant because I didn’t notice anything like this. You must really be a people watcher to notice everything you do about people.
I have to laugh because my friends call me “Queen Beeâ€. The name “Debra†means queen bee. Not that it’s because of my name, but when we’re out with a group of friends, I seem to do all the gathering up——I bring a lot of people together, because I know many people from many places, and have been known to be a ‘match maker’ as well as a ‘friend maker’. They all meet through me. I also hold a lot of dinner parties at me house. (I know—such a ‘gay man’ thing to do, right? Hehe) But, the lesbians I surround myself with all know one another through me. That’s my reason. Other people, it can be because their strong personality is what makes them respected. A strong persona brings forth respect——-but it has to be a persona not of fear- but of a true sense of liking. That’s my own opinion.
Otherwise—she’s just a plain “lookerâ€! ha! That’s the superficial side of me coming out!
Isn’t the Alpha lesbian the one that most closely resembles a man! in looks and mannerisms?

I actually cried a little when we canceled showtime… I honestly loved that show… more all the reasons you stated.
What do I notice when I’m out in public? That people are stupid. Well, you asked.
hmm well i do notice that most groups of anyone have someone that is dominant. mine does. but i havent noticed really that being especially true for lesbians… when i go out with the girls its definitely less true than when i go out with my combined group of friends. although i do run a social group of 250 bi and lesbian women… so maybe im the queen bee when i go out places… hmmm… but im definitely not masc. looking! and no one asks my permission to go to the bathroom. hmm actually the guys do when i go out with my real friends… anyways – kool post.

Perhaps they all travelled there together as a group, and they were letting her know their whereabouts/comings/goings, so she knew where they were for safety-sake? Lesbian or not, safety should always be an issue for women.
