Lately I have seen a few writers talk about chick flicks disguised as guy movies, which is the dumbest new alternative theory that really is a main stream theory.
Every so often someone comes up with an original take on something and it is quickly adopted by a ton of people. The thing is everyone thinks it is like a cool new alternative look at something but because so many people adopt it, well it becomes neither cool, new, or alternative.
The “chick flick disguised as a guy movie”, to be referred to the rest of the way as CFDAAGM, refers to the new batch of comedies including the 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, and Knocked Up. The theory is that in reality these are chick flicks because the actions that the male characters takes are not something that “normal” guys would do. For example, in the 40 Year Old Virgin Andy agrees to wait a period of time to have sex with his girlfriend, the theory argues that no guy would do that if he had a girl that was essentially willing to give it up on the first date. (Never mind the logic of a guy that is 40 years old, has never had sex, and collects action figures but lands a hot chick is passable.)
They apply this logic to these new movies and extract examples, which I think is the dumbest thing ever. When it comes right down to it you can take any comedy made over the last twenty years, apply this logic and say it is a chick flick. Since this theory has been spread by a lot of sportswriters (like JA Adande and Bill Simmons) the machismo drips from it but it is devoid of logic.
Lets look at three of my favorite movies and apply this theory, when you see it in practice you will understand how dumb it is.
Ghostbusters- Bill Murray would not have waited around for Sigourney Weaver’s character, he would have zapped her once he found out she was possessed. Why would he need to chase after her, the Ghostbusters were turning into celebrities, he could have slept with numerous other women. Plus being turned on by her by that point of the movie would have been akin to bestiality.
Bachelor Party- A real man would not have turned down sex with any of the hot hookers or the ultimate hot girl that you have had a crush on forever, it is his bachelor party after all. Plus why would Tom Hanks and the boys go to a male strip club, even to mess with his future wifes\’c2\~ party, that is kind of gay, real mean don’t get near Chippendale’s Dancers.
Thelma and Louise- Uh… nevermind
My point is that 80% of all movies made have some sort of romance intrigue, be it implied or actual. Because they have romance do they automatically fall into the chick flick category? Or because a guy doesn’t fall into the norm in his pursuit of a girl does it makes it a chick flick? Ok, I am off to go watch the Notebook.
How dumb is this chick flick theory or do you agree with it?
