Dig! The Movie and Home Cooking
So I have netflix… I watch a lot of movies… or more like I copy of lot of movies to watch at a later date. Whatever you want to say… My friend Kris’s fiancé recommended this movie “Dig!” to me when I was back visiting them in NY. I filed it in the back of my mind and when I was searching for some new movies to check out I found it on Netflix and added to my queue. For the love of god I wished I had watched it earlier…
First let me give you a spoiler free background of what the movie is, this is directly from the movie’s website:
DIG! is the feature-length documentary shot over seven years about musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of the Dandy Warhols, star crossed friends and bitter rivals. From the moment they met, The Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre quickly bonded over a desire to not conform to the tastes of the recording industry. Yet, the bands’ choices over how to express their creativity and originality in a profit-driven industry eventually put them at irreconcilable odds. Culled from 1500 hours of footage and narrated by [tag]Courtney Taylor[/tag], DIG! follows the underground giant Anton Newcombe, unearthing him to be an important yet largely unnoticed artist of our time. In 1996 Anton Newcombe and his band the Brian Jonestown Massacre – who in a decade independently released 11 albums, 3 recorded in one year – are hell-bent on staging a revolution in the music industry. They are convinced their friends, the Dandy Warhols, will join them to create a united front. But Anton’s creative psychosis takes him to the most remote areas of the human mind to find his original art, and as a result, he destroys every opportunity for financial success.
While tracking the destructive path of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, DIG! also accompanies the more “well-adjusted’ Warhols through their leader Courtney Taylor, as they navigate the corporate sea, trying to maintain their creative edge while starring in mega-budget music videos and entertaining crowds in the tens of thousands.
DIG! is about both musicians’ love and obsession, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers – their choices between art and industry, which unfold with the passage of time.
I had heard of both bands but was never really into them all that much, so I felt like I would be missing out by watching this film. Even if you don’t know anything about either of the bands this is still one of the most interesting, enthralling, and entertaining movies you will watch.Anton Newcombe is a fucking trainwreck… He has a myspace page click here and as you can tell by some of his ramblings he is a little out to leftfield.
(For example his thoughts on mandy moore from his page “mandy moore (she is a lesbian) i like the fact she likes girls not guys-i don’t like the fact she claims to be a virgin and is a disney robot &; won’t come out – don’t like her acting or her music….”) Watching him self destruct is mesmerizing, I sat there and I couldn’t even believe what I was watching. Go out and get this today… Trust me you will not be disappointed. Just for the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s first industry showcase which might be the funniest thing I have ever seen.
Yeah so moving on…
I have been helping my mother make homemade raviolis for? Christmas.. Yeah we are rather Guido. She makes them from scratch which isn’t hard to do but so fucking ridiculously time consuming that it isn’t even funny. My job is to combine the top portion of the ravioli to the bottom using a fork to seal the dough around the cheese. We are already about two dozen in and I want to kill myself. The thing is that her sauce and the ravioli are so good that they need to be made. I guess the bright side is that I am learning how to make them so I can avoid doing them for the rest of my life.
So here is a list of things that take entirely way too long to do:
1)Wait in line at best buy during Christmas season- 15 registers built 4 open… what the fuck?
2)Stop motion animation- Now we must move jack’s 1/24 of an inch… snap picture… now move it another 1/24 of an inch… snap picture… now another… So boss what are we filiming today? By the time we are done with this over the next 16 hours jack will have picked up a ham sandwich. Wow where do I sign up for that?
3) Anything involving the DMV where you have to accomplish two separate acts… like getting a license and a registration.
4) Developing abs- I just don’t see the point in putting in all the work out time, eating right, just so your stomach has bumps…
5) Explaining to my mother how to do anything that involves modern technology.
6) Listening to John Kerry give a speech… I am a democrat but this guy is not the most concise speaker
7) Drive anywhere on the 405 during rush hour- You might as well just shoot yourself.
Listening to Drew Barrymore try and explain the electoral college.
