AMC Theatres will not allow “the dirtiest joke ever told” into its North American theatres, deciding not to screen the documentary The Aristocrats.

The film, directed by comic Paul Provenza, features 100 well-known comedians analyzing and performing their own versions of the same, filthy joke that has made the rounds since vaudeville days. Comedians participating include George Carlin, Phyllis Diller, Bill Maher, Chris Rock and Robin Williams.

The film dubs it the “world’s dirtiest joke”  too vulgar to perform in public.

The Aristocrats will have its Canadian premiere during the Just For Laughs comedy festival at the Imperial Theatre in Montreal on July 22.

AMC says its chairman, Dick Walsh, made a business decision not to play the film. Pam Blase, AMC’s spokesperson, says the company is “very selective” about what it screens and plans to stick to its decision.

ThinkFilm, the movie’s distributor, accuses AMC of censorship because it had agreed previously to play the film in Atlanta and Chicago.

Jeff Sackman, head of ThinkFilm, says the problem is that one person is deciding what’s appropriate to watch.

The film is scheduled to open in New York at Loews theatre in Times Square as well as the Mann Theatre in Santa Monica and another cinema in Los Angeles on Aug. 12, none of them owned by AMC.

The Aristocrats opened to rave reviews at January’s Sundance Film Festival.

Here is southpark’s take on the dirtiest joke ever told… Don’t play it if you can get in trouble at work or anything like that….
