Why NASCAR is Not a Sport

Why NASCAR is not a sport.

Every sport has classic movies that are attached to it. Football has the “Longest Yard”, “North Dallas Forty”, “Knute Rockne All-American”, and “Brian’s Song”. Baseball has “Bull Durham”, “Field of Dreams”, and “Damned Yankees”. Every sport has a classic movie… Hockey, Boxing, Soccer, Golf, Wrestling (not fake wrestling), and even Marathon running… they all have classic movies. NASCAR has “Stroker Ace” and “Days of Thunder” yeah… read that sentence again… STROKER ACE and DAYS OF THUNDER….. Come on now…

Your major trophy or title is sponsored and for years it was named after cigarettes associated with total white trash. It used to be the Winston cup and now it is the Nextel cup… What other sport has a sponsorship of their major title… NONE.

There is not NASCAR college racing. Every other sport is played at a collegiate level.

When you are actually integrated come back and talk to me. There will be a female president before there is an African American Nascar champion. Hell, half the people hate Jeff Gordon because he is from California so he is not “one of the boys”. Not the most open minded fans ever. Go ahead and try to throw hockey in my face. The scoring leader Jerome Ignla is African Canadian… Um next.

They are driving billboards… Lame.

Come back to me when at least half of your events are held above the Mason Dixon line.

Look at the crowd there…. … 80% white trash… and I bet at least 90% of a NASCAR crowd voted for Bush proving the lack of intelligence.

THEY DRIVE AROUND IN A CIRCLE FOR HOURS……….

I can drive fast too.

People die in major events every couple of years. It doesn’t make it a sport it makes it an act of idiocy.

Which one of these things is not like the other: Montana, Gretzky, Jordan, Armstrong, Mia Hamm, Bonds, Dale Earnhardt… Oh that is right one of these people are pushing up daises. It is no good to have the best person from your sport in the last twenty years dead…

Too many people attend events in RV’s.

I am sure I will think of more reasons… I will add to this later.

I agree with you that NASCAR is not a sport… but your reasons are just plain stupid.

Jeff Gordon is from Pittsboro, Indiana, by the way.

NASCAR has a sponsorship name as their title – that’s because they want money. You’re soooooo right, no other sport does that at all. Now please excuse me while I go turn on the Totinos Fiesta Bowl.

“Driving billboards.” No other sport does that? Remember when baseball had their Spiderman promo bases? Does that mean that’s not a sport? Ever been to a baseball game? There are so many promotions that it drives

Your entire post shows how closed-minded you are. You basically make the statement that everyone who enjoys NASCAR is white trash, and everyone that lives in the midwest is stupid white trash. This “I’m better than you attitude” is what holds the country down and makes you look like a huge asshole.

    • The ad campaign clearly isn’t working as well as they hope. Why? It’s the “Tostitos” Fiesta Bowl, not Totino’s. Tostito’s makes really salty chips that make me want to drink 40 beers at once. Totino’s makes crappy pizza turds that make me crap for 40 minutes.

No ball or athletic abilities needed, therefore NOT A SPORT!

  3. fahq says:

Oh, and people from the midwest ARE stupid white trash!

    • midwesterner says:

people from the midwest…most of them ARE stupid white trash. I’m from Wisconsin. Do you realize how many damn f’ing beat up trucks I see driving around pouring out black smoke from their damn exhaust pipes because they don’t realize they’re trucks are burning oil by the mile? Every mile you’ll see a few. Cheerleading is more of a sport than Nascar is. lol :)

sport [spawrt, spohrt] –noun 1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

While NASCAR may not be the most physcially demanding type of auto racing in terms of athletic requirement (Formula 1 and various Sports Car classes that are involved in Endurance Races would rank tops here), there is still a requirement of skill, precision, and physical ability involved. Driving a car at it’s limits is not at all like similar driving on the street, which is probably the key reason many people seem to think that the skills involved or ordinary or easy. Simply keeping a car balanced and in control, while at the limits of it’s grip is tough. Doing so while driving and manuevering with other competitors is tougher still.

Autoracing can require great physical endurance, competing in layers of fireproof clothing in cockpits where the temperature often is well in excess of 100 degree F. And doing this for hours, while having to stay 100% focused and alert. Providing the correct amount of steering/throttle/brake input can require careful control (and in some cases where the rules do not allow for power assistance, quite a bit of strength!). Yes, the athletic requirement in NASCAR is less than some other forms of auto racing, but it is there, and is very real.

So, there is a definite athletic element, and there is competition. It meets the definition of a sport.
