Setting back AIDS knowledge by ten years

By: Bobby Finstock on 10/6/04 @ 10:11 am

For my second speech in my public class we had to do an informative speech.

I did a speech on political spin, another person did a speech on the difference between disk brakes and drum brakes, someone else did a speech on the importance of water in our everyday diets.

Decent speeches. Nothing exciting but decent. Then a girl got up and decided to speak out AIDS and HIV. She cited stats about how many people have it in Ventura County, LA, and for some random reason Bakersfield. (Out of all the cities and counties you could quote stats about why Bakersfield.) For my NY friends Bakersfield is like Utica… The armpit of the state.

Back to my point. The girl went on to say that one of her co-workers was missing work so the boss was going to fire him. THe worker came out and said that they had HIV. Then it spirals out of control the girl went onto say that everyone there was going to quit unless the guy was fired. Because they couldn’t fire him they basically segregated him from the other workers. She is not saying this in a manner where she was outraged but where she was saying it was the right thing to do. She finished by saying that the guy was really hot and he didn’t look like he had AIDS. So we should be careful because anyone we might run into would have AIDS.

I think the professor threw up in their mouths.

I am amazed daily about how stupid people are.

A friend of mine with AIDS used to work for (now bankrupt) Adelphia Cable in the call center where he was segregated and treated like crap. Nobody would eat the food he brought to company potlucks, and after he had hugged another co-worker in a friendly way, a gang of co-workers threatened him in the parking lot saying “don’t spread your shit around.”
